It does not matter where you are going, to another town, another state or another country, unless you are being chauffered and pampered all the way, you will need help in arriving at your destination. This could take the form of asking for directions at every change of transport, or asking the locals everywhere you go. This can be fun and is called adventure travel, but sometimes it leads to more adventure than actual travel in the direction you want to go :)

To help alleviate those concerns, most people will take along some type of navigation aid, most commonly a map, like the one above, this is a road map of Australia. There are road maps that cover most of the countries on the earth, but not all are accurate, so they can still lead to adventure! Quite often, road maps are country, state or even town specific and depending on the scale, can show just the major highways, like the one depicted, or they can zoom right in and show farm tracks, which is ideal for those off road travellers. Other styles of maps commonly used are underground subway maps like for the Tube in London, and others called tourist maps. These are specifically designed to help you take in the sights of specific towns or regions in your destination area, like the one show below of a part of Rome
